10th Anniversary June 17 – 23

Next week marks the 10th Anniversary since the advent of WRAP’s ‘The Big Recycle’ in 2003, a landmark welcomed by scrapstoresUK.

Recycling week offers a timely reminder that for nearly 40 years the scrapstore ethos has directed recycling into a significantly more creative mode through the establishment of a Nationwide network of scrapstores.

Nearly 100 scrapstores currently serve local communities in the British Isles from the Shetland Isles to Cornwall, East Anglia to Northern Ireland and most recently Dublin, Ireland.

Scrapstores are creative reuse centres accepting a diverse range of materials from retail window displays to industrial off-cuts, paper, textiles, plastic packaging and promotional materials, manufacturing and rebranded surpluses, unused over runs and cancelled orders.

Theses clean and safe resources from over 3,500 companies and businesses of all sizes from multi – nationals to single owner enterprises; if it were not for scrapstores these materials and items would be destined for landfill or incineration.

The UK scrapstores network diverted over 16,830 tonnes of waste away from landfill in 2012! That equates to approximately 22,440 transit van loads and if the vans were parked nose to tail they would make a continuous parked line stretching along the M42 from Oxford to Birmingham – 78 miles, which is as long as the Great Glen Way the coast to coast path across Scotland.

But more importantly the waste materials are fantastic resource, reused to provide a range of low-carbon, locally sourced art, craft and creative play materials to local community organisations, such as schools, play groups, scouts/guides and 'out of school' organisations. Our scrapstores currently support over 74,000 community groups that benefit over 6 million children across the UK, promoting and advancing the education of the public from all walks of life on the sustainability of resource reuse whilst playing and having fun.

‘Scrapstore’ is a generic term relating to resource centres across the country that, receive a range of materials. If they are clean and have no sharp edges a scrapstore can probably take the materials.
