Best way to hire a car in Turkey

Alright lads, flying out to Dalaman next month from Manchester and I want to hire a car to drive along the coast instead of being stuck in some resort for two weeks. Never rented abroad before though, and I keep hearing stories about deposits going missing and dodgy insurance. What is the best way to sort this without getting scammed?

The airport desks look convenient but they will absolutely fleece you on the insurance, charging double what you would pay if you sorted it beforehand, and that is before they try to upsell you on extras you do not need. Local firms away from the airport are usually cheaper and more flexible, but you want to book through a proper platform so there is a paper trail rather than shaking hands with a random bloke in a car park.
